A message for presenting Chusonji Lotus
by ToShikazu Yamada, Chief Abbot of ChuSonji-tempIe

Lotus is known to have been on the earth for one hundred million. It is so old that ancient Egyptian lotus design and a lotus-shaped pedestal for lion capital are famous.

Lotuses were introduced into India through Silk Road at Alexander the Grate's far eastern expedition.
In India it is said that lotuses blossomed when Buddha was born. So lotus has been related deeply to Buddhism.
Lotus Sutra, Buddhism Scripture, says that lotuses blossom in mud, but they are never dyed by mud. Sukhavati Sutra says that in the Paradise there are a lot of lotus blossoms, blue, yellow, red and white, which are bright and good smelling, then the Paradise is very beautiful.

On September the third, 1189,Yasuhira,the fourth ruller of the Fujiwara family was killed and the Fujiwara family's 100 year history ended.
In the box which Yasuhira's head was put, also about 80 lotus seeds were put. And in 2005,lotuses blossomed from the seeds, taking 800 years. The lotus was named Chusonji Lotus.

Chusonji stands in Tohoku area and there is a custom that when somebody died, people put seven kinds of seeds in the coffin. It means a gentle heart for the dead to avoid hunger even after death.
From the custom we imagine:Yasuhira was killed unfortunately and only his head was back to his family. The family did not have enough time to prepare a seed bag. They just busily gathered seeds from the lotus field and gently put the seeds in the coffin without a bag.
Perhaps the gentIe heart to consider the dead makes the light vermilion lotus blossoms more beautiful.

We wish our lotuses will blossom in Egypt and friendship and goodwill between us will come out.
